anyone any ideas for making something that looks like beer cheaply? I was thinking of watered down Irn Bru but maybe it's too orange...

Iced tea. It's what they use in the soaps apparently.

Tesco's do value bitter and lager for about 9p and 11p per 500ml can respectively. considerebly cheaper than irn bru. If that's still too much you could always piss into a glass.

Depending on how often you have to reshoot a scene you might want to stick to non-alcoholic beer so that your actors don't get pissed and ruin your takes.

I've always used Ice-T. If you need a head on it and the actors won't actually be drinking the fake beer, dish soap like Palmolive works great. The head will stay just the right size -- even under the hot lights.
